WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Jason Lewis (MN-02) issued the following statement after supporting H. J. Res. 58, to revoke the burdensome teacher preparation rule, and H. J. Res. 57, to nullify the flawed accountability rule, which limited state and local control over education policies:

“I support local schools and state control of education. We should not be tying federal funds to big-government prescribed outcomes, and nor should we let Washington bureaucrats make decisions about students instead of the state and local bodies. We need to put our students first and listen to the concerns of local teachers as we determine effectiveness and standards.”

Background: Lewis, a member of the Education and the Workforce committee, spoke at a hearing today about the need to properly equip our students for their future careers. One-size-fits-all rules from the Department of Education stop our teachers and parents from bringing their valuable input and instead holds funding hostage to a top-down definition of effective student outcomes created in Washington. By passing these bills, the House and Senate can use the Congressional Review Act to stop these damaging rules.
