WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Jason Lewis (MN-02) issued the following statement after his amendment supporting dual enrollment opportunities was included in the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act, which was passed unanimously by the Education & Workforce Committee:

“I’m proud to join Chairwoman Foxx and Rep. Thompson to advocate for an education system that works for our young people. Encouraging dual and concurrent enrollment, especially with technical colleges, puts our kids on a pathway to graduating with the skills they need to succeed and move into a good paying job.”

Background: The Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act, H.R. 2353 reauthorizes the Carl. D Perkins Career and Technical Education Act, which is the primary federal law supporting state and local Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. Lewis is a cosponsor of this legislation. The Perkins Act makes grants to states to expand access to CTE and give students hands-on training to equip them for in-demand jobs in today’s economy. Lewis’ amendment ensures that parents and students are aware of dual and concurrent enrollment opportunities available and encourages the development of articulation agreements to make sure that postsecondary credits earned in dual enrollment are transferable toward a recognized postsecondary credential.
