WASHINGTON D.C.- Congressman Jason Lewis (MN-02) issued the following statement after the America’s Water Infrastructure Act of 2018, which incorporates the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA), passed with unanimous bipartisan support this afternoon in the House.

“Ensuring our country maintains and builds quality infrastructure to support our transportation and water resource needs is a top priority of mine as a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. With WRDA 2018, we are continuing to invest in our nation’s ports, locks, dams, waterways, and other water infrastructure to sustain and improve the transportation and commerce supported by our country’s waters. It is vital that our infrastructure investment keeps pace with our growth and development as a nation.”

The America’s Water Infrastructure Act of 2018 includes WRDA, which focuses on building and investing in water infrastructure and resources to strengthen trade and facilitate commerce, in addition to incorporating multiple other water system overhauls such as:

-Modernizing drinking water infrastructure by providing states and utilities with compliance and asset management tools

-Addressing antiterrorism and resilience measures in public water systems

-Increasing consumer transparency measures for water quality

-Promoting hydropower development and increasing consumer participation in rate-setting

-Simplifying the process for states to receive federal funding for storm and wastewater systems

-Providing technical assistance to small, rural, and tribal communities who may struggle to meet their clean water needs

-Authorizing resources for combating sewage overflow

-Supporting apprenticeships and on-the-job training in the water utility sector and helping connect students to successful career paths that benefit our communities
