WASHINGTON, D.C.- Congressman Jason Lewis (MN-02) issued the following statement after attending a tour and Energy Roundtable at the Prairie Island Nuclear Plant this afternoon with Chairman John Shimkus (IL-15) and members of the Red Wing and Prairie Island Indian communities.

“The Prairie Island Nuclear Generation Plant has carried the burden and cost of long term nuclear spent fuel for far too long because the federal government has neglected its promise to local communities and power plants around the country to open a national repository for spent nuclear fuel. Joined today by Environment Subcommittee Chairman Shimkus and members of the Red Wing and Prairie Island Indian communities, we came together to discuss storage alternatives, as we owe it to our communities to remove this risk on local sites.”

Background:

Chairman John Shimkus authored the Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act of 2017, H.R. 3053, which provides practical reforms to the nation’s nuclear waste management policy to ensure the federal government’s legal obligations to dispose of spent nuclear fuel and high-level waste are fulfilled.
