WASHINGTON D.C.- Congressman Jason Lewis (MN-02) issued the following statement after voting in favor of the Balanced Budget Amendment this afternoon.
“For far too long, politicians in Washington have traded their votes for bloated budgets in exchange for increased spending in their favored programs. Then they claim they have to raise taxes to cure the deficit. Nonsense, tax revenues are at record levels and the CBO has said, even after the jobs-producing Tax Cut and Jobs Act, revenues are set to rise over the next 10 years. I didn't come to Washington to play that game. Our unsustainable debt is a result of over-spending, period. Every program, every organization and every Cabinet level department must share in the belt tightening. That's why I voted against Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018 and Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2018. It’s why I'm the lead author of the Defense Audit bill which would require the Pentagon to implement some financial responsibility measures. And it’s why I voted for the Balanced Budget Amendment today. Businesses, families and states have to do it, so should the federal government—before it’s too late.”
